I am a 1st generation Chinese American.
I was told to go to school, get good grades, graduate from university, get a job, work hard, retire and collect from my pension. That was my plan. I am a former Wall Street Executive and I spent 15 years working 60 - 80 hours a week for the same company.
After about 5 years into my career, I realized the long hours were taking a toll on me and I needed to focus on my physical and mental well-being as well as my career. That was when I was introduced to the sport of dragon boat racing and my wellness journey began.
In 1998, I was one of the founding members of Women In Canoe in NYC. Our premier women's crew was the 1st to represent Team USA in the Dragon Boat World Championships in Nottingham, England in 1999! I've also competed in dragon boat competitions in NYC, Philadelphia, Orlando, Tampa, Puerto Rico, Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Amsterdam and Hong Kong. I was 2 months pregnant when I competed and earned my 3rd US National dragon boat competition title!
In 2007, when I returned from maternity leave, my position on Wall Street was eliminated. I have a pension but contributions are no longer being made to it and I will not receive monthly distributions without tax penalty until retirement age.
In 2008, my husband and I decided to make the full time move to Puerto Rico where my husband’s businesses were. As a new mom, my priorities shifted. I want to have the time and financial freedom to put my family first. I want to be present for our daughter as she hits many milestones in her life. I want the flexibility to drop her off at school, volunteer and attend school activities and pick her up from school if I choose to. I also want to financially contribute to the family and be able to give my daughter whatever she wants without money being a consideration.
In 2009, I started an online business to financially contribute to the household expenses and still be in control of my schedule so I can choose to put my family first.
In 2011, I realized I was so focused on taking care of my family and my business that I forgot to take care of me again! I decided to get back to living a healthier lifestyle. I started competing again for fun in SUP and dragon boat racing and I started detoxing my body and fueling it with the nutrients it needs. I did not realize how bad I was feeling until I started feeling amazing!
In 2014, after some personal health issues, I was finally diagnosed with hashimoto’s disease. Since then, I have been on my journey to optimal health and wellness.
